Tossing Brick

Bricks have long been synonymous with protests. As a common weapon of resistance at protest sites, bricks underscore the stark disparity in force between protesters and authoritarian regimes. In the era post-street protests, bricks highlight the cost of confronting tyrannical power.

This artwork is conceptualized from concrete bricks, specifically modeled after the Hong Kong Highways Department’s Concrete Paving Blocks Type ‘B’ standard design. Their dimensions are identical to the street bricks found throughout Hong Kong. Each piece is hand-molded by the team, featuring an indented “RESIST” on the surface and comes with a unique production number.
Named “Casting Bricks,” the title not only directly connects to the act of protest but also harbors the hope that through charity sales, it can “lead to gems” – generating donations for the 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund. The aim is for the artwork to prompt Hongkongers to reflect anew on the costs of resistance, the price one pays, and the value of democracy and freedom. Simultaneously, it aspires to offer tangible support to the movement.
