Lady Liberty Hong Kong hosted the inaugural Hong Kong Liberty Art Prize in 2023. Collaborating with Flow HK, the prize-winning artworks will embark on a global exhibition, commencing with the first stop in Taiwan.
If Hong Kong regains its freedom in the future, historians may possibly designate the “Hong Kong National Security Law” as the prelude to China drawing an authoritarian iron curtain. While Hong Kong remains confined on the unfree end, Hong Kongers escaping the iron curtain continue their resistance ethos, expressing the longing for freedom within the curtain through various means. Under political oppression, the artistic expression of freedom in Hong Kong struggles to unfold. The inaugural Hong Kong Liberty Art Prize, themed “Glory to…,” protests the Hong Kong government’s prohibition of the song “Glory to Hong Kong,” a defiant anthem for countless Hong Kongers.
As China’s military threats escalate, and regional tensions intensify, Taiwan and Japan face the forefront of East Asia in countering China. The traditions of liberal democracy in these island nations continue to provide a space for the free will of Hong Kongers to develop even after the enactment of the “Hong Kong National Security Law.” This has gradually brought together the local Hong Kong community with a sense of mutual assistance. The exhibition of the Hong Kong Liberty Art Prize in Taiwan, for the first time, serves as an opportunity in this geopolitical era to showcase the resurgence of human rights values through art. As China’s regime denies human rights and distorts democracy, Hong Kongers should become a hub for regional human rights cooperation, preserving the values we cherish. On the occasion of World Human Rights Day on December 10th, Flow HK, the Lady Liberty Hong Kong, and the Japan Hong Kong Democracy Alliance connect the creative forces supporting freedom in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan. Together, they witness how artists in exile persist in creating, using different art forms to express themselves, creating hope for the region and the world.
This event is assisted by the Hong Kong Fellowship of Jinan Presbyterian Church in Taiwan and will take place in Taipei for a 10-day exhibition. In addition to the prize-winning works from the Hong Kong Liberty Art Prize, the exhibition also features works from several Hong Kong artists currently residing in Taiwan. Flow HK, the Lady Liberty Hong Kong, and the Japan Hong Kong Democracy Alliance sincerely invite like-minded individuals and groups worldwide to gather in Taiwan, supporting the ongoing mission of the Hong Kong democracy movement.
