【Tossing bricks to attract jade】
On the second anniversary of June 12, Lady Liberty HK is launching a fundraising artwork series. Limited to 100 pieces, each art piece is priced at $10,000 HKD, hoping to raise 1 million HKD for 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund.
The work is based on concrete bricks, modelled after the Concrete Paving Blocks Type ‘B’ standards by Highways Department. The size is exactly the same as the common paving bricks in Hong Kong. Each piece is hand-poured by our team, with the word RESIST indented to the brick.
Bricks have always been closely related to the Hong Kong democratic movement; as a common means of resistance at demonstrations, bricks highlight the disparity of force between protestors and the oppressive government; in the post-street protest era, it highlights the cost of standing up against tyranny.
The work is titled “Tossing Bricks”. Other than directly associating the work to the movement, it is referencing the idiom “tossing bricks to attract jade, meaning to elicit more value with lesser things, hoping to attract much-needed resources for protestors. At the same time, provoke Hongkongers to rethink what it cost to protest and the value of democracy and freedom.
